Elena, what should I know before visiting Athens for the first time?

Athens will surprise you! It’s this amazing blend of ancient and modern life that just works. The city has such a vibrant energy – imagine sipping a frappe at a trendy cafe while gazing at a 2,500-year-old temple! Pack comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll want to explore every corner.

The city centre is actually quite compact, with most major sights within walking distance. And don’t skip the neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki – they’re the heart and soul of Athens.

How can I get around Athens without a car?

Trust me, you won’t need a car here! The metro system is excellent – clean, modern, and connects all major attractions. It’s like a mini museum too, with ancient artifacts displayed in many stations. The blue line takes you directly from the airport to the city centre.

For short distances, walking is your best bet – you’ll discover charming little squares and hidden cafes. And if you’re tired, taxis are affordable and plentiful.

Which historical attractions in Athens are must-sees for first-time visitors?

No trip to Athens is complete without a visit here

The Acropolis is absolute magic, especially early morning or late afternoon when the light makes the marble glow. But don’t just rush to the Parthenon – take time to explore the Ancient Agora below. It’s where Socrates once walked!

The Acropolis Museum is stunning, with its glass floors revealing excavations beneath. And make time for the Temple of Olympian Zeus – it’s less crowded but equally impressive.

Layers of flavor. Layers of culture.

What are some traditional Greek dishes I should try in Athens?

Oh, where do I start! Moussaka is a classic, but try pastitsio too – it’s like Greek lasagna. For street food, souvlaki is king – get it from O Kostas in Syntagma. Don’t miss Greek breakfast with thick yogurt and honey.

And here’s a local secret: try Loukoumades (honey doughnuts) in Psiri neighbourhood. They’re heavenly! And remember, dinner in Athens starts late, usually after 8 pm.

What are the best months to visit Athens for good weather and fewer crowds?

Spring and autumn are perfect – warm sunny days without the summer heat. March to May or September to October are ideal.

You’ll get better hotel rates, shorter queues at attractions, and more pleasant temperatures for walking. Plus, in spring you’ll see the city squares bursting with flowers, while fall offers amazing sunsets over the Acropolis.

Is it easy to get by in Athens without speaking Greek?

"Want to take a piece of Athens with you? Start here."

Absolutely! English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Most signs are in both Greek and English, and younger Athenians especially are quite fluent.

However, learning a few basic Greek words like ‘efharisto’ (thank you) and ‘kalimera’ (good morning) will bring big smiles and warmer welcomes.

Are there any cultural customs or etiquette tips I should be aware of?

Greeks are incredibly warm and hospitable people. Don’t be surprised by the kisses on both cheeks when meeting friends! In restaurants, service might seem relaxed – that’s because meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory, 10% is fine.

And if you’re visiting churches, dress modestly – always cover shoulders and knees, and get off those hats and sunglasses. Oh, and that thing about Greeks smashing plates? That’s just for tourists! Real Greek celebrations are about food, dance, and lots of laughter.

Do you want to add something we forgot to ask?

Before we wrap up, I’d love to share a few hidden gems that most guidebooks don’t mention. Take a sunset stroll up Philopappos Hill – it offers the most spectacular views of the Acropolis without the crowds. For a truly local experience, visit the Varvakeios Central Market in the morning. This is where Athenian chefs buy their ingredients, and the atmosphere is electric!

And here’s my favourite evening tip: head to a rooftop cinema in the summer months. Watching a movie under the stars with the illuminated Acropolis as your backdrop – that’s pure Athens magic.

Finally, don’t miss the changing of the guard ceremony at Syntagma Square every hour. The Evzones guards in their traditional uniforms perform an incredibly precise routine that tells so much about Greek pride and tradition. These are the moments that transform a regular city visit into an unforgettable and unique Athens experience.
